COURSE AIM

The course in Laser Science and Safe Use of Laser and Intense Pulsed Light aims to provide accredited training in the safe use of laser and intense pulsed light apparatus in the clinical environment and for sales demonstration.

This course complements existing competences already gained by clinical practitioners, manufacturers, repairers
and demonstrators involved in Laser and non laser Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology.

WHO SHOULD DO THIS COURSE

This Intensive course is highly recommended for medical, allied health and cosmetic professionals, who are considering to expand their clinical services with laser or IPL technology or anyone working within a laser or IPL facility.

Persons using Laser and IPL equipment or employed to demonstrate, install and repair these devices may require a licence to do so and this course meets those requirements.

On successful completion of this course a Laser Safety Certificate will be issued and the title of Laser Safety Supervisor is given, which is recognised by relevant Australian radiation health authorities, and professional indemnity insurance providers.

 

An RPL can only be given for the course in Laser science and Safe use of Laser and Intense Pulsed Light as an entry requirement for either of the above mentioned Graduate Certificate Courses, if the applicant can provide quality evidence that he/she :

  • has attained the competencies described in the unit/s of competency that are being claimed
  • possess the required underpinning knowledge specified in the unit/s of competency
  • has applied the relevant competencies in a laser therapy clinic or related work environment
  • comply with the rules of evidence which must be authentic, valid, reliable, current and sufficient to be granted an RPL in any one of the 3 VBP competencies.
  • Qualified health practitioners applying for recognition of prior learning in laser safety must have already completed a laser safety course approved by radiation health authorities within Australia and possess a recognised Laser Safety Certificate.

 

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE COURSE ENTRY:

Applicants shall hold a professionally recognised health science qualification and full membership of a recognised professional association relating to their qualification and approved by the Australian Institute of Laser Therapy; and either :

  • hold a degree of a university relevant to the award e.g. Medicine, Cosmetic Medicine, Cosmetic Surgery, Clinical Dermal Therapies, Nursing, Podiatry, Naturopath, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Skin Therapy.
  • hold a diploma or advanced diploma in the above mentioned allied health or skin management profession.
  • satisfy the requirements for entry into this course by means of other qualifications and relevant experience in the clinical treatment of skin and /or cosmetic surgery aftercare, with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience.

  • VBP 672- Apply a knowledge of laser science to low intensity laser therapy
  • VBP 673- Operate laser equipment
  • VBP 674- Apply safe procedures when using laser equipment

 

DURATION OF EACH GRADUATE CERTIFICATE COURSE : 820 HOURS CONSISTING OF-

  • COMPULSORY CLASSROOM STUDY : 8 HOURS per study unit
  • PART TIME DISTANCE STUDY: 802 HOURS. Recommended study time is 10 to 16 hours per week

A GRADUATE CERTIFICATE LEVEL OF QUALIFICATION WILL BE AWARDED: when all classroom and external study and competency requirements are fulfilled within a 12 to 18 month time period.

Study unit fees include lunch and refreshments, study notes, combined classroom tutorials and practical workshops, written, oral and practical examination and assessment of workplace documentation relating to each unit. Course fees do not include textbooks, equipment, products. Course fee is non refundable 7 days prior to commencement of each classroom study unit.

Class size is restricted to 5 students per study unit to maximise interactive discussion and practical tuition.

Enrolments close off 14 days prior to commencement of each study unit: If students cannot attend they will be enrolled in the same study unit on the next available date.

 

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING FOR GRADUATE CERTIFICATE COURSES :

Past graduates of the Australian Institute of Laser Therapy (AILT) who wish to upgrade their qualifications to a Graduate Certificate level and who completed training between the year 2004 and 2005 and hold certificates of attainment in Laser Science and Safety (Module A) and Clinical electives (B,C,D,F,G) of previous accredited course 21019VIC in Clinical Laser Therapy in Healthcare, are eligible for recognition of prior learning and exemption of classroom attendance for the following study units : VBP675, VBP676, VBP677, VBP824 of the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Laser Therapy and Intense Pulsed Light for Dermatology and Scar Repair, however classroom units VBP678 and VBP683 must be attended.

Exemption of classroom attendance is given for study units: VBP675, VBP679, VBP680, VBP681 of Graduate Certificate in Clinical laser Therapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions, Pain and Wound Healing. However classroom study units VBP678, VBP682, must be attended.

PLEASE NOTE: Past graduates who completed training with the Australian Institute of Laser Therapy (AILT) prior to 2004 must attend all classroom study units and hold a recognised Laser Safety Certificate.

COMPETENCY: Long distance education and fulfilling the required competency assessment requirements of the Graduate Certificate courses is mandatory for all past graduates of the Australian Institute of Laser Therapy.

 

COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Classroom and workplace practical application: validated by clinical case studies and supported by written validation.
  • Plus a written research assignment of 3,000 words relating to each classroom study unit
  • Competency requirements must be completed for each study unit to qualify for the Graduate Certificate in either of the following 2 courses - Graduate Certificate in Clinical Laser Therapy and Intense Pulsed Light for Dermatology and Scar Repair OR Graduate Certificate in Clinical Laser Therapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions, Pain and Wound Healing
